Behind the Build: A Home for Every Heart
BC SPCA Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre – Community Construction Update – Nov 21, 2025
We’re thrilled to share a progress updated from our Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre construction site – a place filled with the promise of hope for adoptable animals with complex behaviour needs.
Summer brought the installation of the essential mechanical and electrical systems within the centre to support clean, comfortable spaces for the animals and for the dedicated staff and volunteers who will care for them.
The roof has been sealed just in time for the rainy winter season, and the outdoor kennels are taking shape. With the structure weather tight, our committed project team can now shift their focus indoors to transforming the building into a true healing space for animals. Walls will soon go up, defining spaces like the Dog Gym where animals will play and socialize and our Real-Life Room, to mimic life in home rather than a sterile clinical setting.
We’re deeply grateful to our construction team, whose hard work is helping build a place where animals in need will receive the compassionate support they deserve. And to you, our wonderful community, thank you for believing in our vision, to build a home for every heart. Your support makes every step possible, and we can’t wait to continue sharing this journey with you.
While construction continues, we’re still here for you and for the animals in our community:
- Community Services Office: #103 – 481 Trans Canada Highway in Duncan

Thank you for helping us create a brighter, kinder future for animals on Southern Vancouver Island.

BC SPCA Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre — Community Construction Update – May 1, 2025
We’re thrilled to share a heartwarming progress update from our Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre construction site – a future place of hope and healing for adoptable animals working through behaviour challenges. Over the past few months, every shovel of earth moved has brought us closer to helping these animals build the skills they need to thrive in loving homes!
January marked an exciting milestone — the very foundation of this dedicated Centre in Canada was poured. Footings and pad foundations, essential for supporting the building’s strength (and the futures for animals), were completed with care. Despite the winter chill, our dedicated team ensured everything stayed on schedule, tucking the concrete in with warm blankets so our vision could continue to take shape.
February brought a light dusting of snow, but also clear skies and steady momentum. Perimeter drains were installed — a small but vital detail that means the animals, along with the compassionate staff and volunteers who care for them, will be safe, warm, and dry in the years to come.
Now, with the underground work nearly complete, we’re beginning to see the building rise — a physical promise of the healing and transformation that will soon happen inside. We look forward to seeing the specialized spaces take shape, we’re excited to see features like the Dog Gym, Play Yards, and the dedicated Behaviour Suites and Rooms for dogs, cats, and small animals — each thoughtfully designed to support their unique behavioural needs.
